Train Stations
Canada's intercity passenger rail is operated by VIA Rail, a crown corporation, on a network stretching from Victoria, BC to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The flagship Canadian train runs 4,466 km from Toronto to Vancouver in 4 days, crossing the Canadian Shield, the prairies, and the Rocky Mountains. The Corridor service between Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto (2h-5h) is the network's busiest and most frequent. VIA's Renaissance equipment on long-distance routes offers economy seats, sleeping berths, and the Park car dome observation car. Canada's vast geography means most long-distance VIA routes run only 3 times per week or less -- making precise scheduling difficult for travelers. The Corridor offers up to 8 daily departures on the Montreal-Toronto segment, which takes about 5h. Amtrak's Adirondack and Maple Leaf connect New York to Montreal and Toronto respectively. Rocky Mountaineer, a private luxury train operator, runs seasonal scenic services through the Rockies but is strictly a tourism product with premium pricing. VIA tickets are available at viarail.ca; discounts of 25-50% apply when booking 14+ days ahead through the Escape fare. The Canrailpass provides unlimited travel for 7-60 days. Eurail/Interrail does not cover VIA Rail. Urban transit in Toronto (TTC, GO Transit), Montreal (STM, exo), Vancouver (TransLink with SkyTrain LRT), and Ottawa (OC Transpo) operates separately from the national VIA network.
