Mexico has undergone a significant rail revival under recent government investment. The flagship project is the Tren Maya -- a 1,554 km tourist and commuter rail circuit connecting Cancun, Tulum, Palenque, Campeche, and Merida across the Yucatan Peninsula, inaugurated in December 2023. The Tren Interurbano Mexico-Toluca was under construction to connect Mexico City to Toluca in under 40 minutes. Ferromex and Kansas City Southern operate extensive freight railways, but Mexico lacks significant intercity passenger rail outside these new projects. Mexico City has the most developed urban rail system in Latin America: the Metro (12 lines, around 5 million daily passengers), the Metrobus BRT, the Tren Ligero light rail, and the Suburbano commuter rail to Cuautitlan. The Suburbano connects Buenavista station in central CDMX to the State of Mexico suburbs in 52 minutes. Many Mexican cities including Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Leon have urban metro or light rail systems of varying extent. The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway (El Chepe) remains Mexico's most iconic rail journey, traversing the Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre) from Chihuahua to Los Mochis through one of North America's most dramatic landscapes. The full 655 km journey takes about 16 hours and crosses 37 bridges and 87 tunnels. Two levels of service are operated: the premium Expreso and the more affordable Regional.

The Tren Maya is a 1,554 km railway circuit across the Yucatan Peninsula, inaugurated in December 2023. It connects Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Chetumal, Palenque, Campeche, and Merida. It was built partly through jungle and serves both tourists and local communities. Tickets are sold at trenmayanline.com and at stations.
El Chepe runs 655 km from Chihuahua to Los Mochis through the spectacular Copper Canyon (deeper than the Grand Canyon in places). The journey takes about 16 hours and passes through 37 bridges and 87 tunnels. The El Chepe Expreso offers premium service with panoramic cars. Book at chepe.com.mx; advance booking essential in high season.
Very limited. Mexico privatized its freight railways in the 1990s and discontinued most passenger services. The Tren Interurbano Mexico-Toluca was under construction as of 2025. The Suburbano serves Mexico City-Cuautitlan. For most intercity travel, Mexicans rely on ADO and other long-distance bus services, which are frequent and comfortable.
Mexico City Metro (STC Metro) has 12 color-coded lines with over 195 stations. Single fare is MXN 5 (about USD 0.25) regardless of distance -- one of the world's cheapest. Metro cards (Tarjeta) can be loaded with credit. Trains are busy during rush hours (07:00-09:30, 17:00-19:30); certain cars are reserved for women and children.
El Chepe through the Copper Canyon is Mexico's defining rail journey, passing Tarahumara indigenous communities, canyon lookouts, and dramatic ravines. The Tren Maya offers unique Mayan archaeology access in the Yucatan jungle. Both provide experiences unavailable by car or bus.
