An electric motor mounted on or near a bogie that drives the train's wheels via a gearbox. Modern trains predominantly use AC asynchronous or permanent magnet synchronous motors controlled by IGBT or SiC inverters. Traction motors also enable regenerative braking, where the motor acts as a generator to feed energy back into the overhead wire or onboard batteries.
