Ljubljana railway station is the main terminus of the Slovenian capital, a compact but efficient station opened in its current building in 1849 that has been progressively modernised while retaining its early 20th-century character. It connects Ljubljana with Vienna, Budapest, Zagreb, and Venice via international services, and handles domestic trains to Maribor, Koper, and Nova Gorica. The station sits at the northern edge of the city centre, within easy walking distance of Metelkova and the Dragon Bridge, and a major redevelopment plan has been discussed for years that would bury the tracks and reconnect the station area with the surrounding city.
