A distância entre as faces internas dos dois trilhos de uma via ferroviária, medida a um ponto 14 mm abaixo da cabeça do trilho. A bitola da via é o fator mais importante na interoperabilidade ferroviária, pois trens projetados para uma bitola não podem operar em outra sem equipamentos de mudança de bitola ou troca de bogies.
