Morocco operates Africa's first high-speed rail line, the Al Boraq (named after the mythical winged horse), connecting Casablanca and Tangier via Kenitra in just 2h10m (distance 350 km), at speeds up to 320 km/h. The line opened in November 2018 and was built with French TGV technology by Alstom. Al Boraq is operated by ONCF (Office National des Chemins de Fer), Morocco's national railway company, which also runs the conventional network connecting Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, Fez, Oujda, and other major cities. The conventional ONCF network covers over 2,100 km and includes air-conditioned 1st and 2nd class intercity trains connecting Morocco's major Imperial Cities. Casablanca to Marrakech takes 3h, Casablanca to Fez takes 4h45m, and Casablanca to Oujda takes 9h. Train travel is comfortable, affordable, and recommended over buses for inter-city journeys in Morocco. Casablanca has a ONCF tramway and a regional rail (Train Navette Rapide) connecting Casablanca to Rabat in 50 minutes, running every 30 minutes. Tickets are sold at oncf.ma, the ONCF app, and station counters. Advance online booking unlocks lower fares. Morocco is not covered by Eurail. International connections by rail include train-ferry combinations to Spain via Algeciras (through the Strait of Gibraltar ferry) -- no direct rail tunnel exists between Africa and Europe.
