The United States has a limited passenger rail network relative to its size, with Amtrak as the national intercity operator subsidized by the federal government. Amtrak serves over 500 stations in 46 states, with the Northeast Corridor (NEC) being by far the busiest: the Acela Express reaches 240 km/h between Washington DC and Boston, covering the DC-New York leg in 2h45m and New York-Boston in 3h30m. Outside the NEC, most Amtrak trains operate at conventional speeds on freight-owned track where passenger trains are legally given lower priority, causing frequent delays. Long-distance Amtrak trains serve iconic cross-country routes: the California Zephyr (Chicago to San Francisco, 51h), the Empire Builder (Chicago to Seattle, 46h), the Southwest Chief (Chicago to Los Angeles, 40h), and the Coast Starlight (Seattle to Los Angeles, 35h). These trains offer Superliner sleeping cars with roomettes and bedrooms, a dining car, and a sightseeing lounge. They are more tourism than commuter-focused, and delays of several hours are common. Several states and regions have developed commuter rail networks independent of Amtrak: MBTA (Boston), Metro-North/LIRR/NJ Transit (New York area), SEPTA (Philadelphia), MARC/VRE (Washington DC), Metra (Chicago), BART/Caltrain (San Francisco), and Metrolink (Los Angeles). The Brightline private operator runs Florida services and is expanding. High-speed rail projects in California and the Northeast face persistent funding and regulatory challenges.

It depends on the route. The Northeast Corridor (Washington-New York-Boston) is genuinely competitive with flying for city-centre-to-city-centre travel. Long-distance trains offer a unique scenic experience but rarely beat flying on time or price. For Chicago-Milwaukee, Seattle-Portland, and California corridors, Amtrak is a reasonable option.
Acela is Amtrak's flagship express service on the Northeast Corridor, connecting Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York Penn Station, and Boston. New Avelia Liberty trainsets (Alstom) began service in 2021, reaching a maximum of 240 km/h on some sections, though average speed is lower due to shared track and curves. DC to NYC takes around 2h45m.
Amtrak's USA Rail Pass allows travel within a set number of segments (journeys) over a 15-day, 30-day, or 45-day period. It can offer savings for travelers covering many routes. However, reservations are required for each segment and popular trains fill up. Sleeper accommodations cost extra beyond the pass price.
Amtrak long-distance trains operate on tracks owned by freight railroads (Union Pacific, BNSF, CSX, etc.), which legally prioritize their own freight trains. Amtrak has limited ability to maintain schedules when freight traffic is heavy. The NEC, which Amtrak owns, has far better on-time performance.
The Acela on the Northeast Corridor reaches 240 km/h in segments but averages much lower speeds due to track geometry and shared usage. California High-Speed Rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco is under construction with the first Merced-Bakersfield segment targeted for the late 2020s. Brightline West (Las Vegas-Rancho Cucamonga) is under active construction as of 2025.
