Heerbrugg station is centrally located, within walking distance of the town centre and the Rhine valley plain. The town sits near the Austrian border in the broad Rhine valley.

SBB trains connect Heerbrugg to St. Gallen in about 40 minutes. The station is on the Rhine valley line running between Rorschach and Buchs/Sargans. Cross-border connections to Austria are available via Lustenau.

Heerbrugg station has basic facilities. The town is a practical stopping point in the Rhine valley between Lake Constance and the Alpine Rhine gorge.
