Taiwan has an excellent rail network combining the high-speed Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) and the conventional Taiwan Railways (TRA). The THSR connects Taipei to Kaohsiung (345 km) in just 1h35m at speeds up to 300 km/h using Japanese Shinkansen 700T technology, with intermediate stops including Taichung (50 min from Taipei) and Tainan (1h22m from Taipei). The THSR opened in 2007 and transformed travel on Taiwan's west coast, effectively making the entire western corridor a single metropolitan area for commuting purposes. Taiwan Railways (TRA, soon rebranded as the Taiwan Railways Corporation) operates the full island circuit, including the scenic east coast route through the Taroko Gorge and Hualien-Taitung corridor. The Tze-Chiang express (Taroko and Puyuma trains) serves this east coast route, reaching 130-150 km/h. The TRA circle line around the island (about 900 km) takes around 16 hours and passes through mountains and dramatic Pacific coastline. Taipei's MRT (Metro) is one of Asia's most modern and reliable, with 6 lines and extensions ongoing. THSR tickets are sold at thsrc.com.tw and at station kiosks; early discount tickets (20-35% off) are available online. TRA tickets are sold at railway.gov.tw. The Taiwan Rail Pass covers unlimited THSR and TRA travel for 3-10 days and is available to foreign tourists. The EasyCard IC card works on Taipei MRT, buses, and some TRA regional services.

The fastest THSR trains (non-stop Nangang-Zuoying) complete 345 km in 1h35m. Standard express services with stops at Banqiao, Taichung, Zuoying take 1h50m. With all 8 stops, journey time is about 2h. Trains depart every 15-30 minutes during peak hours from Taipei Main Station.
The Taiwan Rail Pass provides unlimited travel on both THSR and TRA trains for 3, 5, or 10 days and is available only to foreign tourists. It must be purchased at designated service centers or travel agencies outside Taiwan, or at THSR/TRA stations in Taiwan with a foreign passport. A 3-day pass costs around TWD 1,800-2,000 (approximately USD 60).
The Puyuma and Taroko express trains run along Taiwan's spectacular Pacific east coast via Hualien, passing near Taroko Gorge. The route uses tunnels through the Central Mountain Range. The Hualien-Taitung section passes dramatic sea cliffs and river valleys. Book TRA tickets in advance at railway.gov.tw as east coast trains sell out weeks ahead.
Take the Puyuma or Taroko Express (TRA) from Taipei Main Station to Hualien in about 2h. These trains cut through the mountains via the Northern Cross-Island Highway tunnels. Advance booking is essential -- trains sell out weeks ahead on weekends and holidays. Alternatively, THSR to Hsinchu then connecting bus, but train is faster.
The EasyCard works on Taipei MRT, New Taipei MRT, Taoyuan Metro, Kaohsiung MRT, city buses, and designated TRA stations for commuter routes. It is not accepted for THSR tickets or most long-distance TRA express trains, which require separate ticket purchases. The card is rechargeable at MRT stations and convenience stores.
