Axle Counter

An electronic device installed at the entry and exit of a track section that counts the number of axles passing each point. When the entry and exit counts match, the section is confirmed clear. Axle counters are increasingly preferred over track circuits as they are unaffected by rail contamination, crushed leaves, or poor ballast insulation.
