Visp is a crucial junction station in the upper Rhône valley of Valais, where the SBB mainline toward Brig and the Simplon meets the BVZ/Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn branch line that ascends through the Matter valley to Zermatt. The station is the gateway for the majority of international visitors heading to Zermatt and the Matterhorn, one of Switzerland's most iconic destinations, and handles a significant volume of tourist traffic throughout the ski and hiking seasons. RegioExpress and IC services connect Visp directly with Bern, Lausanne, and Geneva without changing trains, while Eurostar ski trains from London stop here in the winter season, making Visp one of the most internationally connected alpine junction stations in Switzerland.
