Positive Train Control (PTC)

A GPS- and communications-based safety system mandated on most US freight and passenger railroads that automatically stops or slows a train before certain accidents occur, including overspeed derailments, incursions into work zones, and movements through misaligned switches. PTC implementation across the US network was completed in 2020 following a Congressional mandate.
