Hot-Box Detector

A wayside infrared sensor that monitors the temperature of wheel bearings (journal boxes) on passing trains. Overheated bearings indicate impending failure that could cause a derailment. When a hot box is detected, the system automatically alerts the dispatcher and the train crew to stop for inspection. Detectors are spaced at intervals along major freight corridors.
