Bergen station is the western terminus of the Bergen Line, widely regarded as one of the world's most scenic railway journeys, which crosses the Norwegian mountains at more than 1,200 metres altitude to reach Oslo. The current station building, dating from 1913 and extended in later decades, sits at the edge of Bergen's historic Bryggen wharf district and handles regional commuter services around the Hordaland region as well as the daily long-distance trains to the capital. Bergen's position as Norway's second city and a major cruise port means the station is a gateway for large numbers of both domestic and international visitors.

Bergen station is located right at the edge of the city centre, a five-minute walk from the famous Bryggen wharf and the Fisketorget fish market. City buses and the Bybanen light rail also serve the station area.

Vy trains operate the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen) between Bergen and Oslo, with the journey taking approximately six and a half to seven hours across the spectacular high mountain plateau. The route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.

A luggage storage service with both staffed counters and lockers is available at Bergen station during normal operating hours. It is practical for travellers who want to explore the city after checking out of their accommodation.

The lower terminal of the Fløibanen funicular, which climbs to the Fløyen hilltop with panoramic views over Bergen, is a ten-minute walk from the station through the city centre. It operates daily and is one of the city's most popular attractions.

Bergen is the western terminus of the Bergen Line, so there is only one main rail route out of the city toward Oslo. Book well in advance during summer as the scenic journey is very popular. Connecting buses to the fjords (Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord) depart from the bus terminal adjacent to the station.
