Norway's rail network, operated by Vy (formerly NSB), covers the country's dramatic fjord-and-mountain landscape with some of the world's most scenic rail journeys. The Bergen Railway (Oslo to Bergen, 7 hours) crosses the Hardangervidda plateau at over 1,200m elevation and is widely regarded as one of the world's great train trips. The Flam Railway (Flamsbana) descends 863m over 20 km from Myrdal to Flam through waterfalls and mountain scenery, making it one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. The Dovre Railway connects Oslo to Trondheim (7 hours) via Gudbrandsdalen valley. Norway has limited high-speed rail infrastructure -- trains reach around 210 km/h on the Oslo-Gardermoen airport line. Most intercity routes involve single-track lines through mountainous terrain, limiting maximum speeds. Vy's trains offer comfortable seating with panoramic windows on most routes. The Nordland Railway from Trondheim to Bodo (10 hours) is the northernmost railway in Norway, crossing the Arctic Circle. Beyond Bodo, the Ofoten Railway continues to Narvik (shared with Sweden's Malmbanan). Tickets are available via Vy's website and app; early booking (7-14 days) unlocks MinPris (lowest price) fares. The Eurail/Interrail Norway Pass covers Vy trains. Norway's rail network integrates with Flam Railway and local buses via Entur (entur.io), the national journey planner. SJ Norge also operates some routes. Rail travel in Norway is an experience in itself -- virtually every route offers outstanding scenery.

The Bergen Railway runs 496 km from Oslo to Bergen, crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau at 1,237m above sea level. The journey takes about 7 hours and passes through 182 tunnels and over 300 bridges. It is considered one of the world's most scenic railway journeys and particularly spectacular in winter snowscapes.
The Flamsbana descends 863 meters over just 20 km from Myrdal (on the Bergen Railway) to Flam at the tip of the Aurlandsfjord. The gradient of 5.5% makes it one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world. It runs year-round and is extremely popular with tourists as part of the Norway in a Nutshell route. Tickets must be booked in advance in summer.
Norway's fastest trains run at around 210 km/h on the Oslo-Gardermoen airport link. Most intercity routes cross mountainous terrain on single-track lines, limiting speeds to 130-160 km/h. A high-speed rail network has been studied but not approved for construction. Flying is still common for Oslo-Bergen and Oslo-Stavanger journeys.
Book Vy's MinPris advance fares (available from 7 days ahead) on vy.no for as little as NOK 299 (approx. EUR 25). Standard fares are around NOK 600-800. The full Eurail Norway Pass is often less economical for a single trip; point-to-point advance tickets are usually cheaper.
Norway in a Nutshell is a self-guided scenic circuit combining the Bergen Railway, the Flam Railway, a fjord boat through Naerofjord (UNESCO site), and a bus or train back to Bergen or Oslo. It can be done as a full day circuit from Bergen or as a one-way journey from Oslo. Fjord Tours and Vy jointly sell combined tickets.
