🇨🇭 Kandersteg

Kandersteg is on the BLS Lotschberg line between Bern and Brig, reachable in about 70 minutes from Bern. Trains run frequently as the station also serves the Lotschberg car tunnel, which carries vehicles through the mountain between Kandersteg and Goppenstein.

BLS regional trains on the Lotschberg line serve Kandersteg. RegioExpress services connect to Bern, Thun, Spiez, and Brig. The station is also the loading point for the Lotschberg car shuttle through the base tunnel to Goppenstein on the Valais side.

Luggage lockers are available at Kandersteg station. The station has a ticket office and is within walking distance of the village centre. The car-loading facility is adjacent to the passenger platforms.

The Oeschinensee, a stunning alpine lake accessible by gondola and a short hike, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kandersteg offers excellent hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. The Blausee nature park with its crystal-clear lake is nearby.

The Lotschberg car tunnel shuttle carries vehicles through the mountain from Kandersteg to Goppenstein in about 15 minutes, avoiding the high mountain passes. Cars drive onto flat rail wagons at Kandersteg station. This service has operated since 1913, making it one of the oldest car shuttles in Europe.
