La gare de Château-d'Oex se situe dans le canton de Vaud, en région du Pays-d'Enhaut, sur la ligne de chemin de fer de montagne à voie étroite Montreux–Berner Oberland-Bahn (MOB), qui serpente à travers les Préalpes entre Montreux au bord du lac Léman et Zweisimmen dans l'Oberland bernois. Le village est mondialement connu comme haut lieu de la montgolfière, accueillant chaque janvier un prestigieux festival international de ballons, et ses chalets traditionnels et ses paysages de montagne en font depuis longtemps une alternative paisible aux stations plus en vogue des environs. Le Golden Pass Panoramic Express, qui relie Montreux à Interlaken Ost avec une correspondance à Zweisimmen, traverse Château-d'Oex, offrant aux voyageurs l'un des plus beaux parcours ferroviaires panoramiques de Suisse.

Chateau-d'Oex is on the MOB line between Montreux and Zweisimmen, about 60 minutes from Montreux. The GoldenPass route is scenic, climbing through vineyards and alpine meadows. The station is at the edge of the village centre.

MOB trains on the Montreux-Zweisimmen Golden Pass line stop at Chateau-d'Oex. Both regional and GoldenPass panoramic trains serve the station. The GoldenPass Express also calls here on its Montreux-Interlaken route.

Chateau-d'Oex station has basic facilities with a small ticket counter. The village centre with its chalets, restaurants, and cheese shops is within a short walk of the platform.

Chateau-d'Oex is world-famous for its International Hot Air Balloon Festival, held every January since 1979. The village was also the starting point of the first non-stop balloon flight around the world by Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones in 1999. A balloon museum commemorates this history.

Beyond the balloon museum and festival, Chateau-d'Oex is a traditional Pays-d'Enhaut village known for paper-cut art (decoupage) and alpine cheese-making. The surrounding mountains offer hiking and skiing, and the village maintains a distinctly French-Swiss pastoral character.
