Meiringen est le terminus de montagne de la ligne Zentralbahn (anciennement chemin de fer du Brünig) reliant Lucerne et Interlaken, situé au fond de la vallée du Haslital, au pied des spectaculaires chutes de Reichenbach et du massif sauvage du glacier de Rosenlaui. Ces chutes sont peut-être mondialement connues avant tout comme le site où Arthur Conan Doyle mit en scène la mort apparente de Sherlock Holmes et du professeur Moriarty, et un musée Sherlock Holmes en ville célèbre ce lien littéraire. La gare est le point de départ des randonneurs et cyclistes qui explorent les confins orientaux de l'Oberland bernois, et les gorges de l'Aareschlucht se trouvent à quelques minutes de trajet.

Meiringen is reached by Zentralbahn trains from Interlaken Ost or Lucerne. The journey from Interlaken takes about 30 minutes, while from Lucerne via the Brunig Pass it takes about 90 minutes. The Brunig line is one of Switzerland's most scenic mountain crossings.

Zentralbahn operates services through Meiringen on the Interlaken-Lucerne line via the Brunig Pass. The Meiringen-Innertkirchen Bahn (MIB) narrow-gauge railway connects to the Aareschlucht gorge and the Grimsel/Susten pass roads.

Meiringen is famous as the setting for Sherlock Holmes' dramatic encounter at the Reichenbach Falls, reached by a historic funicular. The Aareschlucht, a narrow limestone gorge, is accessible by the MIB railway. The town also claims to be the birthplace of the meringue dessert.

Luggage lockers are available at Meiringen station. The station has a ticket office and tourist information. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is in the village centre, a few minutes' walk from the station.

Meiringen is the main town of the Haslital valley and an excellent base for exploring the region. PostBus services connect to the Grimsel, Susten, and Grosse Scheidegg passes. The area offers extensive hiking and the dramatic Gelmerbahn, Switzerland's steepest open-air funicular.
