Vierzon est une gare implantée à un important nœud ferroviaire dans le département du Cher, en région Centre-Val de Loire, dans le centre de la France, où la grande ligne Paris–Toulouse croise la ligne se dirigeant vers l'est en direction de Bourges et Nevers. Des services TGV s'y arrêtent sur la liaison Paris Austerlitz–Toulouse, et les trains régionaux TER desservent Bourges, Tours et Châteauroux, faisant de Vierzon une correspondance pratique pour les voyageurs traversant le Berry et la Sologne. La ville se trouve aux portes de la Sologne, vaste territoire forestier et lacustre dédié à la chasse, au sud du Val de Loire et de ses châteaux.

Vierzon station is centrally located, about a 5-minute walk from the old town and the banks of the Cher river. The compact town centre is entirely walkable from the station.

Vierzon is an important railway junction where the Paris-Toulouse and Nantes-Lyon lines cross. Intercites trains stop here on the way to Limoges and Toulouse. TER Centre-Val de Loire trains connect to Bourges, Tours, and Orleans. The junction status gives it good connectivity.

Luggage storage at Vierzon is limited. The station has a ticket office and basic waiting facilities. As a junction, the station sees regular traffic but is not a large terminus.
