Munich ke Vienna dengan Kereta: Pemandangan Alpine & OBB

4 jam melalui Pegunungan Alpen Austria dengan Railjet OBB — perjalanan lintas batas yang pemandangan dan nyaman.

Alpine Views and ÖBB Elegance

The 4-hour journey from Munich to Vienna by Railjet is one of Central Europe's most pleasant international rail experiences. The route connects Germany's cosmopolitan Bavarian capital with Austria's imperial capital, passing through Salzburg — Mozart's birthplace and one of Europe's most beautiful small cities — at roughly the midpoint. The ÖBB Railjet covers the 456-kilometre route in approximately 4 hours, running at up to 230 km/h on the most modern sections.

Services depart from München Hauptbahnhof (the main Munich station) roughly every 2 hours throughout the day, operated jointly by ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) and Deutsche Bahn (DB). The same trains continue from Vienna onward to Budapest, Graz, or Klagenfurt, making them useful for multi-country journeys.

The Railjet: Comfort and Class

The Railjet offers three service classes:

  • Economy class: Modern 2+2 seating with power sockets and free Wi-Fi. Comfortable for a 4-hour journey.
  • First class: 2+1 seating layout, wider and more spacious, generally quieter. Worthwhile for working travellers.
  • Business class: Available only on Austrian Railjet services (not on all cross-border trains). At-seat meal service, maximum space, lounge-like atmosphere.

All classes have access to a bistro restaurant car serving hot meals, Austrian wines, coffee, and snacks. The standard of food is notably higher than British or American equivalents — a Wiener Schnitzel from the bistro car while watching the Austrian Alps pass the window is one of rail travel's simple pleasures.

Ticket Prices: ÖBB and DB

Both ÖBB and DB sell tickets for this route, sometimes at different prices for the same train.

  • ÖBB Sparschiene: from €19.90 one-way in Economy class (advance booking, non-refundable)
  • DB Sparpreis: from €17.90 in second class (advance, similar restrictions)
  • Standard flexible fares: €50–90 in Economy/Second; €90–140 in First/Business

It is always worth checking both operators' websites for the same date — the cheapest available price can differ by €10–20. Both allow seat reservations included in the price for international services.

Salzburg: The Unavoidable Stopover

Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is approximately 1h40 from Munich and 2h15 from Vienna. Many passengers on the Munich–Vienna route deliberately choose to break their journey here for a few hours or overnight. The old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just 15 minutes by bus from the station, and the castle above the city, the Mirabell Gardens, and the Getreidegasse shopping street can be comfortably visited in half a day.

Salzburg is also the junction for trains to Innsbruck and through the Brenner Pass to Italy. For travellers heading to the Tyrol or northern Italy, changing at Salzburg offers additional routing options.

Scenery: The Alpine Foothills

Between Munich and Salzburg, the train runs through the gently rolling Bavarian foothills — an attractive but not dramatic landscape. After Salzburg, as the train heads east toward Vienna, the character changes: the line runs through the Salzkammergut lake district on some routings, and the mountains recede as the train approaches the Danube Basin. The final 30 minutes approaching Vienna Hauptbahnhof run through the flat eastern Austrian lowlands, with glimpses of the Wienerwald hills to the west of the city.

Cross-Border Ticketing Tips

  • You do not need separate Austrian and German tickets — both operators sell through tickets for the full Munich–Vienna journey
  • Eurail/Interrail passes require a seat reservation (approximately €5–10) for Railjet cross-border services
  • The Bayern-Ticket (€29 for 1 person, €6 per additional person up to 5) covers regional trains in Bavaria only — it does not cover Railjet or allow travel beyond the German border
  • For onward travel from Vienna, buy a combined through ticket rather than splitting — it is typically the same price or cheaper

No Border Formalities

Germany and Austria are both members of the Schengen Area, so there is no passport control at the German-Austrian border. The train crosses uneventfully — near Freilassing or Salzburg, depending on routing. Non-Schengen travellers need a valid passport but will typically face no active check on the train. The currency is the euro in both countries, and mobile phone plans with EU roaming work seamlessly throughout.

Day Trip to Salzburg from Either End

Salzburg's position at the exact midpoint makes it the perfect day trip from either Munich or Vienna. From Munich, the fastest trains reach Salzburg in 1 hour 25 minutes (Railjet or Eurocity). Alternatively, the Meridian regional train takes 1h50 but costs only €29 with a Bayern-Ticket (valid for up to 5 people, regional trains only). From Vienna, Railjet services reach Salzburg in 2 hours 20 minutes, with ÖBB SparSchiene fares from €19.90.

A half-day in Salzburg covers the Festung Hohensalzburg (the hilltop fortress, reached by funicular), Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse, the Mirabell Gardens (of Sound of Music fame), and a coffee and Sachertorte at Cafe Tomaselli — one of Austria's oldest coffeehouses. During the Salzburg Festival (late July-August), the city transforms into a global centre for opera, theatre, and classical music — book both trains and tickets months in advance.

Onward Connections from Vienna

Wien Hauptbahnhof is one of Central Europe's most connected stations. From here, Railjet services continue to Budapest (2h40), Prague (4h00), Bratislava (1h00), Graz (2h35), and Ljubljana (4h00). The ÖBB Nightjet overnight service reaches Rome (12h), Venice (9h), and Hamburg (11h). This makes the Munich-Vienna corridor not just a destination journey but a gateway to a wider Central European rail network — a single week with a Eurail pass can comfortably include Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest.

Munich's Station: A Hub Under Renovation

Munchen Hauptbahnhof is Germany's second-busiest station, serving over 450,000 passengers daily. The station is currently undergoing a major reconstruction programme (2024-2030s) that will modernise the main hall and improve capacity. During construction, some platform numbering and access routes change — check DB Navigator or station signage for current platform assignments. Despite the construction, all Railjet and Eurocity services to Austria operate normally. The station is directly connected to S-Bahn and U-Bahn networks, with Marienplatz (Munich's central square) just 5 minutes by S-Bahn. The Augustiner brewery restaurant on the station's ground floor offers proper Bavarian beer and food — a fitting start or end to the journey.

The Linz Stopover

Linz Hauptbahnhof is an intermediate stop roughly 3 hours from Munich and 1 hour from Vienna. Austria's third-largest city, Linz was European Capital of Culture in 2009 and has reinvented itself as a technology and arts hub. The Ars Electronica Center — a museum devoted to digital art, science, and technology — is a 15-minute walk from the station and is unlike anything else in Austria. The Lentos Kunstmuseum on the Danube riverfront houses an excellent modern art collection. For those with less time, the main square (Hauptplatz) and the narrow streets of the old town are a 10-minute walk and offer a pleasant hour of wandering, with excellent coffee at traditional Austrian cafes.

Alpine Scenery: Best Viewing Sections

The most scenic stretch of the Munich-Vienna route is the section between Salzburg and Attnang-Puchheim, where the train skirts the northern edge of the Austrian Alps. On clear days, the peaks of the Dachstein massif (2,995 metres) and the Tennengebirge range are visible to the south, and the rolling foothills of the Salzkammergut lake region create an attractive pastoral landscape. Sit on the right side of the train heading east for the best mountain views. After Linz, the terrain flattens considerably as the train enters the Danube Basin toward Vienna.
