Estações Ferroviárias
Italy's high-speed rail network is one of Europe's most competitive, with two major operators running services on the main north-south corridor. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa (Red Arrow) trains connect Milan and Rome in under 3 hours at up to 300 km/h, while private operator Italo (NTV) offers comparable services at competitive prices. The Alta Velocita (AV) network extends from Turin through Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples, forming the backbone of Italian intercity travel. Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains serve routes partly on conventional track, extending coverage to Venice, Bari, and Reggio Calabria. Regional trains (Regionale and Regionale Veloce) operated by Trenitalia connect smaller cities and towns at very affordable fares. Several regions have transferred services to private operators like Trenord (Lombardy) and Trentino Trasporti. The Trenitalia app and website (trenitalia.com) handle domestic bookings; the Italo app covers NTV services. Both offer advance Super Economy and Economy fares that can be significantly cheaper than base fares, though these are non-refundable. Sicily is reached via the Messina Strait, where trains board a state ferry. Sardinia has an independent narrow-gauge rail network (ARST/Trenino Verde) not connected to the mainland. Italy's scenic train offerings are exceptional: the Bernina Express (shared with Switzerland), the Cinque Terre coastal line, and the historic Circumvesuviana around Vesuvius are popular with tourists. The Eurail Italy Pass and Global Pass both cover Frecciarossa services, though reservation fees apply.
