The World's Most Famous International Train Journey

The Eurostar is one of the great engineering achievements of the modern railway era. Launched in 1994 when the Channel Tunnel opened, it connects the centres of Paris and London in just 2 hours 15 minutes — faster door-to-door than flying once airport transfers and security are factored in. The train departs from Gare du Nord in central Paris and arrives at St Pancras International in central London, two of Europe's most architecturally impressive stations.

The service is operated by Eurostar, a company jointly owned by SNCF and a consortium of private investors. In 2023, Eurostar also absorbed the former Thalys brand, making it the dominant high-speed operator across the Channel and throughout the Benelux corridor.

The Channel Tunnel: 50km Beneath the Sea

The centrepiece of the journey is the Channel Tunnel (or Chunnel), which runs for approximately 50 kilometres beneath the English Channel — making it the world's longest undersea rail tunnel. The undersea section alone is 38 kilometres long. The tunnel actually consists of three bores: two rail tunnels and a central service tunnel used for maintenance and emergency access.

Passengers barely notice the transition. The train enters the tunnel at Folkestone on the English side and emerges near Coquelles, France, roughly 20 minutes later. There is no dramatic underwater view — just a brief period of darkness and a slight change in air pressure. Some passengers find this anticlimactic; others appreciate its efficiency. Mobile phone signals typically drop in the tunnel but resume immediately upon exit.

Check-In Requirements: Plan Ahead

Unlike domestic high-speed trains in France or the UK, Eurostar operates much like an airline. You must check in at least 30 minutes before departure, and the official recommendation is 45–60 minutes to allow for passport control and security. Eurostar strongly recommends arriving 60 minutes before departure during peak periods (summer, school holidays, Christmas).

The process includes:

  • Security screening (similar to airport security — liquids restrictions apply, laptops out of bags)
  • UK Border Force passport control in Paris (juxtaposed controls, meaning UK immigration happens on French soil)
  • French border police check on departure

This juxtaposition arrangement means that when you arrive at St Pancras, you simply walk off the train without any further checks — a significant advantage over flying. EU citizens and UK citizens have separate lanes; non-EU/non-UK nationals should allow extra time.

Ticket Classes and Prices

Eurostar offers three service classes on the Paris–London route:

ClassStarting PriceIncludes
Standardfrom €39Seat, fold-down tray table, power socket
Standard Premierfrom €99Wider seat, at-seat meal, complimentary drinks
Business Premierfrom €249Lounge access, 3-course meal at seat, flexibility

Standard tickets come in different flexibility tiers — non-exchangeable/non-refundable fares at the low end, fully flexible at the top. The cheapest Standard fares (from €39 one-way) require booking weeks or months in advance and are non-refundable. Snap fares, available on the Eurostar app, sometimes offer last-minute deals in Standard class at very low prices.

Business Premier includes access to dedicated lounges at both St Pancras and Gare du Nord, priority boarding, and a full meal service. For frequent travellers, the Carte Blanche subscription provides unlimited trips at a monthly flat rate.

Tips for the Best Seats

Eurostar's e320 trains (the newer fleet, built by Siemens) are 400 metres long with 900 seats. A few pointers for choosing well:

  • Coach 1 is Business Premier; Standard Premier occupies coaches 2–3 roughly; Standard fills the rest
  • Seats facing the direction of travel are generally preferable — on Eurostar, this varies by train direction
  • Tables seats (groups of 4) offer more space for laptop work but face backwards for half the group
  • Window seats have no through-corridor traffic
  • The quiet coach is available in Standard — useful for working

Frequency and Journey Times

Eurostar runs up to 18 trains per day in each direction between London and Paris during peak periods, with fewer services on Sundays and in off-peak seasons. The journey time is consistently 2 hours 15 minutes on direct services. There is no stopping train — all Paris–London Eurostars are direct.

First departure from St Pancras is around 05:57; last departure around 21:31. From Gare du Nord, the first train leaves around 06:13 and the last around 22:13. Always check the Eurostar website for exact times, as these shift seasonally.

Eurostar vs Flying: Which Is Faster?

On pure journey time, flying wins by about 30 minutes. But the full door-to-door comparison strongly favours Eurostar:

  • Eurostar: City centre to city centre, check-in 45 min before, 2h15 journey, no transfer at destination. Total: approximately 3h30
  • Flying: Heathrow or CDG is 45–60 min from city centres, check-in 90 min before, 1h flight, baggage claim 20 min, transfer back. Total: approximately 5h30–6h30

The environmental case is even clearer: Eurostar produces approximately 6g of CO₂ per passenger kilometre compared to 133g for a short-haul flight. France has banned short-haul domestic flights where a train alternative under 2h30 exists — the Paris–London route is effectively in that spirit already.

Fare Classes: Standard to Business Premier

Eurostar offers three fare classes. Standard is the most affordable, with prices starting from around €39/£39 when booked well in advance. Seats are in a 2+2 configuration with reasonable legroom and a fold-down tray table. Standard Premier (from around €99) includes a light meal served at your seat, wider seats in a 2+1 configuration, and a quieter carriage. Business Premier (from around €250) is the premium offering: fully flexible tickets, fast-track security, access to business lounges at both Gare du Nord and St Pancras, a three-course meal, champagne, and guaranteed WiFi connectivity.

For most leisure travellers, Standard class is perfectly adequate for a 2h15 journey. The key to saving money is booking early — fares increase significantly as departure approaches, and peak Friday evening and Sunday evening services are consistently the most expensive.

Bikes, Pets, and Luggage

Eurostar allows two pieces of luggage plus one piece of hand luggage per passenger, with no weight limit. There is no checked baggage service — you carry everything on board yourself and store it in overhead racks or at the end of carriages. Folding bikes travel free if bagged. Assembled bikes can be booked on selected services for around €30 each way, stored in a dedicated bike carriage. Small dogs and cats are permitted in carriers that fit on your lap (maximum 5kg including carrier). Guide dogs travel free without restriction.

Connecting Services from St Pancras and Gare du Nord

St Pancras International sits adjacent to King's Cross station, providing direct access to LNER services to York, Leeds, Edinburgh, and the northeast. The Tube's Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria, Hammersmith & City, Circle, and Metropolitan lines all serve the King's Cross St Pancras complex, making it one of London's best-connected interchanges. The Thameslink platforms below offer direct trains to Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

At Gare du Nord, connecting TGV and Intercités services depart for Lille, Brussels, Amsterdam, and destinations across northern France. The RER B provides a direct link to Charles de Gaulle Airport (35 minutes, €11.45). Metro lines 4 and 5 connect to the rest of Paris. The station is undergoing a major renovation ahead of the 2024 Olympics legacy period, with improved passenger flows and retail spaces.
