Goppenstein is on the BLS Lotschberg line, reachable from Brig in about 20 minutes. The station is primarily known as the southern entrance to the Lotschberg car tunnel. From the north, the car shuttle departs from Kandersteg.

BLS RegioExpress trains on the Brig-Bern Lotschberg line stop at Goppenstein. The station also handles the Lotschberg car shuttle from Kandersteg. Passengers can transfer between car shuttle and regular train services.

Goppenstein station has limited facilities, primarily serving the car shuttle operation. The station sits in a narrow, dramatic gorge at the southern portal of the Lotschberg tunnel.

The Lotschberg car shuttle carries vehicles through the mountain between Goppenstein (Valais) and Kandersteg (Bern) in about 15 minutes. Drivers remain in their cars on flat rail wagons. The service avoids the high Lotschberg Pass, especially valuable in winter when the road is closed.

Goppenstein sits in the dramatic Lonza gorge in the upper Valais. The surrounding cliffs and narrow valley make it one of Switzerland's most dramatic railway locations. The Lotschental valley above leads to the Blatten village and Lotschenpass hiking area.
