Sleeper (Tie)

A rectangular support laid perpendicular to the rails to hold them at the correct gauge and transfer loads to the ballast. Modern sleepers are typically made of pre-stressed concrete, though timber and steel variants are still in use. Known as a 'tie' or 'cross-tie' in North American terminology.
