Tirano is the Italian terminal of both the scenic Bernina ferrococheril and the Valtellina línea, situated in Lombardy near the Swiss border and the entrance to the Stelvio National parque. The Renaissance Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano is a major pilgrimage site just outside town. The historic centre has Italian baroque architecture and excellent Valtellina cuisine including pizzoccheri pasta. The town sits in a sun-drenched valley known for its vineyards and apple orchards.
