🇮🇹 Italia

Estaciones de tren

Italia's high-speed rail network is one of Europe's most competitive, with two major operators running services on the main north-south corridor. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa (Red Arrow) trains connect Milán and Roma in under 3 hours at up to 300 km/h, while private operator Italo (NTV) offers comparable services at competitive prices. The Alta Velocita (AV) network extends from Turin through Milán, Bologna, Florence, Roma, and Naples, forming the backbone of Italian intercity travel. Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains serve routes partly on conventional track, extending coverage to Venice, Bari, and Reggio Calabria. Regional trains (Regionale and Regionale Veloce) operated by Trenitalia connect smaller cities and towns at very affordable fares. Several regions have transferred services to private operators like Trenord (Lombardy) and Trentino Trasporti. The Trenitalia app and website (trenitalia.com) handle domestic bookings; the Italo app covers NTV services. Both offer advance Super Economy and Economy fares that can be significantly cheaper than base fares, though these are non-refundable. Sicily is reached via the Messina Strait, where trains board a state ferry. Sardinia has an independent narrow-gauge rail network (ARST/Trenino Verde) not connected to the mainland. Italia's scenic train offerings are exceptional: the Bernina Express (shared with Suiza), the Cinque Terre coastal line, and the historic Circumvesuviana around Vesuvius are popular with tourists. The Eurail Italia Pass and Global Pass both cover Frecciarossa services, though reservation fees apply.

Preguntas frecuentes

Trenitalia is the state-owned national operator covering the full network including regional and high-speed trains. Italo (NTV) is a private competitor operating exclusively on the high-speed AV network between major cities. Both serve Milán-Roma-Naples at comparable journey times; comparing prices on both is recommended.
Book 30-90 days in advance for the lowest Super Economy fares. Last-minute Frecciarossa or Italo tickets can cost EUR 80-120 for Milán-Roma, while advance Super Economy fares can be as low as EUR 9-19. Both operators run frequent flash sales.
The Eurail Italia Pass can be useful for longer trips combining regional and high-speed travel. However, pass holders still pay mandatory reservation fees (EUR 10-13) on Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains. For 1-2 trips focused on the main north-south corridor, advance point-to-point tickets often beat pass prices.
Trains run from Roma Termini toward Villa San Giovanni, where the train boards a state ferry across the Strait of Messina to Sicily. Journey time Roma to Palermo is approximately 9-10 hours. High-speed trains terminate at Naples or Salerno; a regional train completes the southern leg.
The Cinque Terre coastal line between La Spezia and Levanto offers stunning sea views. The Val d'Orcia line through Tuscany is a UNESCO heritage route. For mountain scenery, the Brennero-Bolzano-Verona line through the Dolomites is superb. The Trenino Verde narrow-gauge network in Sardinia runs through ancient forests and coastal cliffs.
