🇫🇷 Longwy

Longwy station is in the lower town (Longwy-Bas), about a 10-minute bus ride or steep walk uphill to the UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications in Longwy-Haut. The fortified upper town offers panoramic views.

TER Grand Est trains connect Longwy to Metz in about one hour and to Luxembourg City in about 40 minutes. The station is close to the Belgian and Luxembourg borders, making it a cross-border commuter hub.

Luggage storage at Longwy is limited. The station has a ticket office and basic waiting facilities. The town's main attractions are in the upper fortified town, requiring a bus or taxi.

Longwy-Haut is one of twelve Vauban fortification sites inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage. The star-shaped citadel was designed by Vauban in 1679. Longwy is also known for its enamelled ironware (emaux de Longwy), distinctive for their crackled turquoise finish.

Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban designed the fortified new town of Longwy-Haut in 1679 as part of Louis XIV's defensive system along the northern frontier. The hexagonal star-shaped fortification is remarkably well-preserved and was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2008 as part of the Vauban network.
