Wissembourg has a beautifully preserved old town with half-timbered houses along the Lauter river. The Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul has one of the largest medieval wall paintings in France. The town is at the northern tip of the Alsace Wine Route and surrounded by vineyards.

Wissembourg sits at the northernmost point of Alsace, directly on the German border. The Battle of Wissembourg in 1870 was the opening engagement of the Franco-Prussian War. Today the town's bilingual character reflects its position, with French and German both commonly spoken.
