Basel Badischer Bahnhof is a unique station in that it stands on Swiss soil yet is operated by Deutsche Bahn, reflecting Basel's position at the crossroads of Switzerland, Germany, and France. It primarily serves regional and long-distance trains running on the German rail network, including services along the Rhine valley to Freiburg, Karlsruhe, and beyond. The station's architecture retains elements of its early 20th-century German imperial style, giving it a distinct character quite different from the neighbouring Swiss-operated Basel SBB.

Basel Badischer Bahnhof is located on Swiss soil but is owned and operated entirely by Deutsche Bahn, making it one of the very few foreign-operated stations in Europe. This arrangement dates back to a 19th-century treaty and means you travel through a slice of Germany without leaving Switzerland.
Tram line 8 departs from directly in front of the station and reaches Marktplatz in the old town in around 15 minutes. The tram ride also passes through Kleinbasel and crosses the Rhine, giving you a good introduction to the city.
Deutsche Bahn regional and intercity-express services use this station, including direct trains to Freiburg im Breisgau and onwards along the Rhine Valley. It is the main Swiss entry point for trains arriving from southern Germany.
The station offers self-service luggage lockers on the platform level. For more comprehensive storage options, Basel SBB just across the city has a larger facility and is reachable by tram in about 20 minutes.
Because the station is on Swiss soil, trains arriving from Germany may be subject to Swiss customs checks on arrival, particularly for non-Schengen travellers. EU-Switzerland Schengen arrangements mean routine border controls are usually limited, but customs rules on goods still apply.
