Train Stations
Belgium's rail network is operated by SNCB/NMBS (Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges / Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen), covering the entire country from a central hub in Brussels. Despite Belgium's small size, it serves as Europe's rail crossroads: Thalys/Eurostar trains connect Brussels to Paris (1h22m), London (1h51m), and Amsterdam (1h53m). ICE services reach Frankfurt (2h58m), and direct trains run to Cologne, Zurich, and Luxembourg. Brussels-Midi/Zuid station is one of Europe's busiest international rail hubs. SNCB operates Intercity (IC) and Inter-Regional (IR) trains on the domestic network, with S-train (Sprinter) networks around Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liege, and Charleroi. Belgian domestic fares are relatively affordable, with a standard 2nd class single Bruges-Brussels costing around EUR 15. The Go Pass 10 (10 trips for EUR 55.50) is popular with young travelers under 26. The Rail Pass (10 journeys, any class) suits frequent domestic travelers. Belgium is fully covered by Eurail/Interrail. Thalys (now Eurostar) and Eurostar through-services require separate reservation supplements. Belgium abolished domestic seat reservations on its own trains, simplifying domestic travel. The SNCB app provides real-time departure boards and e-ticket purchasing. Belgian trains are generally punctual though not to the Swiss standard.
