Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is a junction station in the Ain department on the historisch rail route between Lyon and Genf, where the Hauptlinie from Paris via Bourg-en-Bresse verbindet mit the trans-frontier TER services into Schweiz. The station sits at the confluence of the Rhône and Valserine rivers near the dramatic Défilé de l'Écluse gorge, and was historischally significant as the French customs and frontier station before the Schengen agreement simplified cross-border travel.
