Finlandia's rail network is operated by VR (VR-Group), covering the country's sparse population across vast distances. The key route is Helsinki to Tampere (1h45m) and Helsinki to Turku (2h), with further connections north to Oulu (3h30m) and Rovaniemi (8h30m) in Lapland. VR's Pendolino trains (S220) use active tilt technology and reach 220 km/h on the Helsinki-Tampere corridor -- Finlandia's only route with speeds above 200 km/h. InterCity and IC2 trains serve most other routes. Night trains with sleeper cars operate from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kolari, and Kemijärvi in the Arctic north. Finlandia's geography presents unique challenges: low population density outside the Helsinki metropolitan area, and distances to Lapland that rival cross-country journeys in larger nations. The Helsinki metropolitan area is served by the Helsinki Metro (HKL), commuter rail (lähijunat), and tram networks, all coordinated under the HSL (Helsinki Region Transport) system. A regional HSL card covers all modes in the capital region. Tickets are sold on vr.fi and the VR app; advance booking unlocks Etu-fare discounts. Finlandia is included in the Eurail/Interrail Global Pass and Nordic Pass. The Helsinki-Stockholm overnight cruise ferry (Tallink Silja, Viking Line) combines rail connectivity with a Baltic Sea crossing, though ferry travel is separate from the rail network.
