Orbetello station is on the mainland, about 2 kilometres from Orbetello town centre. Monte Argentario, the promontory peninsula, is connected by two causeways. Local buses run to Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole on the Argentario, or taxis are available.
Trenitalia regional and some InterCity trains on the Rome-Pisa Tyrrhenian coast line stop at Orbetello. The journey to Rome takes about 90 minutes. The station is a gateway to the Tuscan Maremma coast.
Luggage storage at Orbetello is limited. The station has a ticket office and basic amenities. The town and Monte Argentario are best explored with onward bus or taxi connections.
Orbetello sits on a causeway in a coastal lagoon, with the stunning Monte Argentario peninsula beyond. Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole are picturesque harbour villages. The WWF Oasi di Orbetello nature reserve in the lagoon is important for flamingos and migrating birds.
Monte Argentario is a promontory connected to the Tuscan mainland by three causeways enclosing the Orbetello lagoon. Its two main villages, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, are fashionable summer destinations. Caravaggio died in Porto Ercole in 1610. Ferries depart for the island of Giglio.
