Foreign tourists also have access to a separate Tourist Quota at designated Tourist Reservation Offices in major cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata). International credit cards work on the IRCTC website. Tickets open 120 days in advance.

For overnight journeys, AC 3-Tier (3A) offers air conditioning, three tiers of bunks, and reasonable privacy at moderate cost. AC 2-Tier (2A) has more space and curtains for better privacy. Sleeper Class (SL) is non-air-conditioned but very affordable and fine for cooler months. Avoid Unreserved class on long journeys.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (UNESCO World Heritage 'Toy Train'), the Palace on Wheels luxury tourist train in Rajasthan, the Kalka-Shimla mountain railway, and the Konkan Railway route along the Goa coast are iconic. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu is another UNESCO heritage rack railway.
