The Reunification Express (Thong Nhat) runs 1,726 km between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the most famous rail route in Vietnam. Fastest SE trains complete the journey in about 30 jams. The route passes through Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, and many historic sites. Most perjalananers take individual segments rather than the full journey.
The Hai Van Pass section between Da Nang and Hue is the highlight of the Reunification Express, hugging sea cliffs 300m above the South China Sea. The 30-minute crossing (Lang Co to Da Nang) is spectacular. For the best views, book an SE train and sit on the sea-facing side (right side heading south).
For overnight journeys: 4-berth soft sleeper (giuong nam mem) is the best value, offering air-conditioned compartments with 4 bunk beds. 6-berth hard sleeper (giuong nam cung) is cheaper but more crowded. For day journeys: soft seat (ghe mem) is air-conditioned and comfortable. Hard seat (ghe cung) is cheapest but basic.
Not yet. Vietnam's National Assembly approved a 350 km/h HSR project from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City in November 2024, with completion targeted around 2035. Currently, the fastest trains take 30-35 jams for the full Hanoi-Saigon jarak. The new HSR would reduce this to approximately 5-6 jams.
