Amsterdam Centraal is the Netherlands' busiest railway station and one of Europe's most recognisable, its twin-towered neo-Renaissance façade completed in 1889 rising directly from the city's historic waterfront. The station serves as the national hub for Intercity, Sprinter, and international Thalys and Eurostar services, connecting Amsterdam with Brussels, Paris, and London, as well as the regional network reaching all corners of the Netherlands. Its position as the terminal for GVB ferries, metro lines, trams, and buses makes it the absolute centre of Amsterdam's integrated transport system.

Amsterdam Centraal is the starting point for most city transit, with trams departing from the square in front and metro lines running underneath. The historic canal district and Damrak are a five-minute walk from the main exit.

Intercity Direct trains from Centraal to Schiphol Airport take around 17 minutes and run every 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day. Sprinter services are slightly slower but cheaper and also run frequently.

A large NS staffed luggage storage facility and self-service lockers are located in the basement of Amsterdam Centraal, accessible from the main concourse. The service is open daily from early morning until late at night.

Eurostar services to London via Brussels and Thalys (now Eurostar) to Brussels, Paris, and beyond depart from dedicated international platforms at Centraal. ICE services also connect to Cologne, Frankfurt, and Munich several times a day.

Free GVB public ferries to Amsterdam Noord depart from the piers directly behind (north of) the station around the clock, including bicycle-carrying services. These are a popular and practical way to reach the NDSM wharf and the Eye Film Museum.
