Coupler

A mechanical device at each end of a railway vehicle that connects it to adjacent vehicles. Types include the screw coupling (traditional in Europe), Janney/AAR knuckle coupler (standard in North America and Japan), and Scharfenberg automatic coupler (used on most modern EMUs). Automatic couplers also connect air brake pipes and electrical lines.
