La Spezia Centrale is the southern gateway to the Cinque Terre; regional trains reach Riomaggiore in about five minutes and Monterosso al Mare in around 25 minutes. Cinque Terre Express services run frequently in summer and are included in the Cinque Terre Card.

Intercity and Regionale trains link La Spezia to Genoa in about an hour and to Pisa in around 70 minutes. Some Frecciabianca services also call here, providing connections to Florence, Rome, and Turin.

The station has a staffed ticket office, self-service machines, a bar, and luggage lockers on the ground floor. The port area and ferry terminals serving Portovenere and the gulf islands are about a ten-minute bus ride from the station.

Luggage lockers are available at La Spezia Centrale and are particularly useful for hikers arriving for the Cinque Terre trails who wish to leave heavy bags before setting off. A deposito bagagli counter is also available during staffed hours.

La Spezia itself has a lively daily covered market selling local seafood, olives, and Ligurian focaccia — worth visiting before or after the Cinque Terre. The Museo Civico Amedeo Lia, one of Italy's finest collections of medieval and Renaissance art, is just a ten-minute walk from the station.
