🇷🇴 Rumanía

Estaciones de tren

Rumania's rail network is operated by CFR Calatori (state passenger railway) on an extensive 10,600 km network inherited from the communist era. Services range from InterCity (IC) trains on main routes to Accelerat and Personal (slow stopping) trains on branch lines. Bucarest to Cluj-Napoca takes around 7-9 hours by current services, reflecting slow average speeds due to aging infrastructure. However, major upgrades are ongoing: the Bucarest-Brasov corridor is being upgraded to 200 km/h and a new high-speed line is planned to reduce journey times significantly. Rumania received substantial EU funding for railway modernization, and the pace of improvement has accelerated since 2020. New Siemens Desiro and Alstom Coradia regional trainsets have replaced some older rolling stock. The Bucarest Metro (Metrorex) operates 4 lines in the capital. Gara de Nord in Bucarest is the primary intercity hub, connecting to all major Rumanian cities and international services to Budapest, Viena, and Belgrade. Rumania is included in the Eurail/Interrail Global Pass. Tickets are sold at cfrcalatori.ro, station counters, and the CFR app. Fares are very affordable by EU standards. The Transylvania landscape served by trains between Brasov, Sinaia, and Predeal is particularly scenic, as is the Danube Delta narrowband railway near Tulcea.

Current IC trains take 7-9 hours depending on the route and service. The Bucarest-Brasov-Cluj route passes through the Transylvanian Alps. Upgrades are ongoing to reduce this to 4-5 hours on the improved corridor. Overnight trains with sleepers are available for this route.
Main IC trains between major cities are reasonably comfortable, especially with newer rolling stock on upgraded corridors. Older Personal (slow) trains on branch lines are more basic. IC trains have 1st and 2nd class seating with air conditioning on modern fleets. Always book IC or Accelerat trains for intercity journeys rather than Personal trains.
The Bucarest-Sinaia-Predeal-Brasov route through the Carpathian Mountains and Prahova Valley passes mountain resorts, medieval castles, and dramatic gorges. The Moldovita-Gura Humorului route in Bucovina passes painted monastery country. The Mocanita steam train (Maramures) is a tourist narrow-gauge heritage line.
The Ister EuroNight overnight train runs from Bucarest-Nord to Budapest-Keleti in approximately 14 hours, offering couchette and sleeper options. The Dacia Express also operates on a similar route. Alternatively, book a daytime IC to Arad then an OBB Railjet from Arad to Budapest (total about 12 hours).
The Mocanita steam narrow-gauge railway in Maramures (Viseu de Sus to Paltin) is Rumania's most famous heritage line, running through Vaser Valley on a forestry railway. The Apuseni mountain routes in Transylvania and the Doftana Valley near Campina also offer scenic regional rail experiences.
