Estaciones de tren

Vietnam's rail network centers on the Reunification Express (Thong Nhat) -- the north-south mainline stretching 1,726 km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The full journey takes 30-35 hours on the fastest trains. Operated by Vietnam Railways (VR/VNR), the line runs through UNESCO-listed UNESCO Phong Nha caves area, the dramatic Hai Van Pass overlooking the South China Sea, the ancient imperial city of Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An vicinity. Most travelers break the journey at Da Nang or Hue rather than doing the full length at once. Vietnam is investing in a major high-speed rail project: a 1,541 km dedicated HSR line from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City at 350 km/h, which would reduce the journey to 5-6 hours. The National Assembly approved the project in November 2024 with a target completion around 2035. The project is one of the largest infrastructure investments in Vietnamese history. Meanwhile, VNR has been upgrading the conventional network with new SE (Saigon Express) trainsets and improved sleeper cars. Tickets are sold at dsvn.vn, VNR station counters, and third-party platforms like Baolau and 12go.asia. Booking 1-3 weeks ahead is recommended for popular segments (Hanoi-Hue, Da Nang-Ho Chi Minh). Soft sleeper (4-berth) is the recommended class for overnight travel; air conditioning and linen are provided. Hanoi has a suburban railway (Cat Linh-Ha Dong Metro) and Ho Chi Minh City's Metro Line 1 opened in 2024.

Preguntas frecuentes

The Reunification Express (Thong Nhat) runs 1,726 km between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the most famous rail route in Vietnam. Fastest SE trains complete the journey in about 30 hours. The route passes through Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, and many historic sites. Most travelers take individual segments rather than the full journey.
The Hai Van Pass section between Da Nang and Hue is the highlight of the Reunification Express, hugging sea cliffs 300m above the South China Sea. The 30-minute crossing (Lang Co to Da Nang) is spectacular. For the best views, book an SE train and sit on the sea-facing side (right side heading south).
For overnight journeys: 4-berth soft sleeper (giuong nam mem) is the best value, offering air-conditioned compartments with 4 bunk beds. 6-berth hard sleeper (giuong nam cung) is cheaper but more crowded. For day journeys: soft seat (ghe mem) is air-conditioned and comfortable. Hard seat (ghe cung) is cheapest but basic.
Not yet. Vietnam's National Assembly approved a 350 km/h HSR project from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City in November 2024, with completion targeted around 2035. Currently, the fastest trains take 30-35 hours for the full Hanoi-Saigon distance. The new HSR would reduce this to approximately 5-6 hours.
The official VNR website is dsvn.vn (available in English). Third-party platforms Baolau (baolau.vn) and 12go.asia offer convenient English booking with credit card payment. Book 1-3 weeks ahead for popular segments (Hanoi-Hue, Da Nang-Ho Chi Minh). Tickets can also be collected at any VNR station.
