A 53.85 km railway tunnel in Japan connecting Honshu and Hokkaido islands beneath the Tsugaru Strait. Completed in 1988 after 24 years of construction, it was the world's longest tunnel until the Gotthard Base Tunnel opened. Since 2016, the Hokkaido Shinkansen uses a section of the tunnel, sharing it with conventional freight trains at reduced speeds.
