Giswil station is at the edge of the village, a short walk from the main road and local facilities. The village sits in the Sarner Aa valley between Lake Sarnen and Lake Lungern.

Zentralbahn trains on the Lucerne-Brunig-Meiringen line serve Giswil. The station is between Sachseln and Lungern. Some trains require changing at Giswil for the Brunig Pass section.

Giswil station has limited facilities. The small village serves mainly as a transit point on the Brunig line. Basic amenities are in the village centre.

Giswil offers access to the Giswiler Stocket nature reserve and hiking in the Obwalden pre-Alps. The Brunig Pass route above the village is scenic. Lake Lungern, one of Switzerland's most photogenic lakes with its turquoise waters, is accessible from the next station.

The Brunig line is a metre-gauge railway crossing the Brunig Pass between Lucerne and the Bernese Oberland. It is unique as the only SBB (now Zentralbahn) narrow-gauge mainline. Giswil is on the approach to the pass, with the line climbing steeply through alpine scenery.
