Pontresina is a Rhaetian Railway junction in the Upper Engadine, catalogued as UIC 8509255, standing where the Albula line from Chur and St. Moritz meets the Bernina route that crosses the Alps to Tirano in Italy. Panoramic Bernina services pass through the station on a journey that reaches altitudes above 2,000 metres and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage railway landscape. Pontresina and St Moritz are linked by frequent Rhaetian Railway (RhB) services taking around ten minutes. The two resort villages are close neighbours in the Upper Engadine, and the train is the most convenient way to move between them.

Pontresina is on the RhB Bernina line, which runs south over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy — one of the world's most scenic UNESCO-listed railway journeys. The station is also on the Samedan branch, providing connections to Chur via the Albula line.

The station has automated ticket machines, a waiting room, and bicycle rental for exploring the valley. Ski and hiking equipment can be hired in the village, just a few minutes walk from the station entrance.
