Ilanz is on the Rhaetian Railway line from Chur to Disentis, taking about 45 minutes from Chur. The train follows the Rhine Gorge, known as the 'Swiss Grand Canyon,' with dramatic cliff and river views.

Rhaetian Railway regional trains on the Chur-Disentis line serve Ilanz. At Disentis, connections are available to the Glacier Express route via the Oberalp Pass. PostBus services connect Ilanz to surrounding villages in the Surselva region.

Ilanz station is small with basic facilities. The station serves as the main transport hub for the Surselva region. The town centre is a short walk from the platform.

Ilanz claims to be the first town on the Rhine (die erste Stadt am Rhein). The medieval old town has well-preserved houses and a castle. The Rhine Gorge, accessible by train or hiking trail, is a major natural attraction. Romansh culture is strong in this region.

The Ruinaulta or Rhine Gorge near Ilanz is sometimes called the Swiss Grand Canyon. Formed by a prehistoric rockslide, its white limestone cliffs and turquoise river create a dramatic landscape. The train journey from Chur to Ilanz runs along the gorge, and rafting on the Rhine is popular in summer.
