🇨🇭 Glarona

Glarus is reached by S-Bahn and regional trains from Zurich, taking about 70 minutes via Ziegelbrucke. The line runs along the Walensee and into the Linth valley, with mountain views throughout the journey.

SBB S-Bahn and regional trains connect Glarus to Zurich via Ziegelbrucke. Trains also continue up the valley to Schwanden, Linthal, and the Braunwald funicular. The station is a local hub for the Glarnerland region.

Glarus station has a ticket office, luggage lockers, and basic amenities. The station is within walking distance of the town centre and the cantonal parliament square where the traditional Landsgemeinde is held.

Glarus is the capital of one of Switzerland's smallest cantons. The town was almost entirely rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1861, giving it an unusually uniform 19th-century grid layout. The surrounding mountains offer hiking, and the Klontal lake is a peaceful excursion.

Glarus holds an annual Landsgemeinde, one of the last surviving open-air democratic assemblies in the world. Citizens gather in the town square on the first Sunday of May to vote by show of hands. This tradition dates back to the 14th century and is unique to Appenzell and Glarus.
