Tirano is the Italian terminus of both the scenic Bernina Railway and the Valtellina линия, situated in Lombardy near the Swiss border and the entrance to the Stelvio National Park. The Bernina Экспресс, which runs to St. Moritz and Chur in Switzerland, departs from Tirano on a UNESCO World Heritage route across the Alps, famous for its viaducts, loops, and panoramic views. Trenitalia regional services also connect Tirano westward along the Valtellina valley to Sondrio, Lecco, and Milan.

Rhaetian Railway operates the Bernina Express and regional trains from Switzerland. Trenitalia regional trains connect Tirano to Sondrio, Lecco, and Milan. The two stations are adjacent, making the cross-border transfer straightforward.

Luggage storage is available at the RhB station. The town centre with its Renaissance basilica and Italian cafes is steps from the platforms. The charming border town atmosphere makes it worth a brief stop between trains.

The Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano crosses the highest alpine railway pass without a tunnel, reaching 2,253 metres at Ospizio Bernina. The line, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, features the famous Brusio spiral viaduct just above Tirano, where the train loops around itself to descend.

The Renaissance Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano is a major pilgrimage site just outside town. The historic centre has Italian baroque architecture and excellent Valtellina cuisine including pizzoccheri pasta. The town sits in a sun-drenched valley known for its vineyards and apple orchards.
