Greece's rail network is operated by Hellenic Train (formerly TrainOSE), which took over from the privatized OSE network. The main axis is the Athens-Thessaloniki InterCity route, completed after upgrade in 3h20m (504 km), and Athens to Patras (3h). The Athens-Thessaloniki line was extensively modernized for the 2004 Olympics and now uses Stadler FLIRT and Alstom Coradia trainsets reaching 160-200 km/h on sections of upgraded track. Greece has no dedicated high-speed lines, but the Athens-Thessaloniki upgrade represents a significant improvement over the old 6-hour journey. Athens' urban rail network consists of the Metro (3 lines), the electric railway ISAP (Line 1, partially above-ground), the Proastiakos suburban rail, and trams along the southern coastal front. The Proastiakos connects Athens Airport to the city centre in 40 minutes. The narrow-gauge railway in the Peloponnese was largely closed, with limited heritage services only. The Odontotos (rack railway) from Diakopto to Kalavryta (750mm gauge, gradient of 8%) is a tourist attraction. Greece is covered by Eurail/Interrail Global Pass. Tickets are sold at hellenictrain.gr and station counters. Fares are affordable by European standards. The rail network is more limited than in most of Western Europe, and buses (KTEL) are often faster or better connected for inter-city travel outside the main Athens-Thessaloniki axis.

Hellenic Train InterCity services connect Athens (Larissa station) to Thessaloniki in approximately 3h20m-4h after the line upgrade. The fastest trains use Stadler FLIRT sets on the modernized corridor. Book via hellenictrain.gr for advance fares. Multiple departures run daily.

The Odontotos (Diakopto-Kalavryta Railway) is a 750mm narrow-gauge rack railway that climbs through the Vouraikos Gorge in the Peloponnese. The 22 km journey takes about 1 hour with an 8% gradient -- one of the steepest rack sections in Europe. It operates as a tourist attraction and is a highlight of any Greek rail itinerary.

Greek islands are not connected by railway. Ferries are the only transport to islands from Piraeus, Rafina, and Thessaloniki. Trains connect Athens to Patras on the mainland, from which ferries depart to Corfu and Italy. The rail-ferry combination is popular for traveling to the Ionian Islands.

The Proastiakos suburban rail runs from Athens Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) to Larissa Station (main intercity hub) in about 40 minutes, and continues to Kiato on the northern Peloponnese. Metro Line 3 also connects the airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes.

Yes. Greece is included in the Eurail Global Pass, covering Hellenic Train services. Given the limited network, most pass holders use Greece as one component of a broader European itinerary. Seat reservations on IC trains cost around EUR 3-5 and are recommended in peak season.
