Portugal's rail network is operated by CP (Comboios de Portugal) with Alfa Pendular as the flagship intercity service. The Alfa Pendular tilting train connects Lisbon to Porto in 2h45m and Lisbon to Faro in 3h15m, reaching speeds up to 220 km/h on upgraded conventional track. Intercidades trains serve secondary intercity routes, while Interregional and Regional trains connect smaller communities. The Lisbon area is served by extensive urban rail: four CP suburban lines, the Lisbon Metro, and the cross-Tagus Fertagus rail service. Portugal has been planning a dedicated high-speed rail line between Lisbon and Porto for many years, with the project finally gaining EU funding and construction starting in the mid-2020s. When complete, the journey time would be reduced from 2h45m to under 1h30m. A cross-border high-speed connection to Madrid via Badajoz is also planned, which would transform the current 10+ hour overnight train between the two capitals into a 2.5-hour daytime journey. Portugal is part of the Eurail/Interrail Global Pass. CP tickets are sold via cp.pt and the CP app; advance Preco Especial fares offer savings of 30-60% versus standard fares. International services to Madrid (Lusitania Comboio Hotel overnight train via Badajoz) and to Vigo/Galicia are operated jointly with Renfe.

Yes. The Lusitania Comboio Hotel overnight train runs from Lisboa-Oriente to Madrid-Chamartín (approximately 10 hours) via Badajoz. It includes couchette and private sleeping car options. A new high-speed daytime service via the planned HSR corridor is expected to reduce this to under 3 hours when infrastructure is complete.

Book CP's Preco Especial advance fares on cp.pt or the CP app for as little as EUR 10-15. Alfa Pendular takes 2h45m and is the most comfortable option. Intercidades trains take slightly longer but are cheaper for walk-up fares. Standard walk-up Alfa Pendular prices are around EUR 35-45.

The Douro Line (CP Linha do Douro) from Porto to Pocinho follows the Douro River through terraced vineyards and granite gorges -- one of Europe's most beautiful rail journeys. The Regua to Pocinho section is particularly scenic. The Alentejo Line from Lisbon to Evora passes through cork oak forests and rolling plains.

Yes. Portugal is included in the Eurail Global Pass. CP domestic trains require no reservation supplement except for Alfa Pendular (EUR 3-9 reservation fee). The overnight Lusitania to Madrid requires a full sleeper reservation. Regional and suburban trains in Portugal generally do not require advance booking.
