Tirano is the Italian terminus of both the scenic Bernina Railway and the Valtellina line, situated in Lombardei near the Swiss border and the entrance to the Stelvio National Park. The Bernina Express, which runs to St. Moritz and Chur in Schweiz, departs from Tirano on a UNESCO World Heritage route across the Alps, famous for its viaducts, loops, and panoramic views. Trenitalia Regionaldienste also connect Tirano westward along the Valtellina valley to Sondrio, Lecco, and Mailand.

The Renaissance Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano is a major pilgrimage site just outside town. The historic centre has Italian baroque architecture and excellent Valtellina cuisine including pizzoccheri pasta. The town sits in a sun-drenched valley known for its vineyards and apple orchards.
