Trieste Centrale is der wichtigste station of the historisch port city of Trieste in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a city whose position on the Adriatic at the edge of the Karst plateau has long made it a crossroads between Italien, Central Europe, and the Balkans. Trenitalia InterCity and Regionaldienste connect Trieste with Venedig in etwa zwei Stunden, while grenzüberschreitende Dienste run into Slowenien; the station also serves as the Abfahrt point for Slowenienn Railways trains to Ljubljana. The Bahnhofsgebäude itself, a grand early 20th-century structure, is a kurzer Fußweg from the seafront Piazza Unità d'Italia.
