The Bahnhofsgebäude itself, a grand early 20th-century structure, is a kurzer Fußweg from the seafront Piazza Unità d'Italia.

Trenitalia Regionale trains link Trieste to Venedig in etwa zwei Stunden and to Udine in etwa eine Stunde. International Verbindungen to Ljubljana and Zagreb sind verfügbar via a umsteigen in Villa Opicina or through cross-border Regionaldienste.

Trieste's Café culture is distinctive — locals order a 'capo in b' (espresso with a dash of milk in a glass) rather than a standard cappuccino. The historisch Caffè San Marco, just a kurzer Fußweg vom Bahnhof, is one of the grandest examples of a central European literary Café still in operation.
